New York State Election Changes

In late January New York State amended State Election Law to change the day for primary elections from September to the fourth Tuesday in June, this year June 25, 2019.  This will impact the City commissioner election as well.

By having the Primary election in June, this moves all the other election dates up as well.  The first impact is the nominating petition process.  Nominating petitions can now be circulated between February 26, 2019 and April 4, 2019.  The law also spells out when the petitions can be filed, in this case in 2019, that is between April 1 and April 4, 2019.

General election dates remain unchanged, the first Tuesday (following the first Monday) in November, this year November 5.

Commission Election Information

2019 is an election year for Sherrill City Commission.  There are 3 commission spots up for election this year.  The incumbents of those three seats are Tom Dixon, Patrick Hubbard and Jason Merrill.  City residents interested in running for City Commission, can pick up nominating petitions at Sherrill City Hall starting, Tuesday, February 26 and have until Thursday, April 4 to circulate the petition for signatures.  Petitions can only be filed with the City Clerk between Monday, April 1 and Thursday, April 4, 2019.  For a nominating City Commissioner petition, potential candidates would have to accumulate at least 42 valid signatures.  To be a valid signature, the signer must be a verified registered voter.  Signers of the petition can sign no more than three (3) nominating petitions.  Signing more than three (3) petitions voids the signature on all nominating petitions signed.

Sherrill would only need to hold a Primary election for City Commission if seven (7) or more residents filed nominating petitions with the City Clerk.

Any additional or specific questions can be directed to the City Clerk/Comptroller, Michael Holmes at City Hall 315-363-2440.
